What is Moonfest?

Moonfest, also known as the mid-autumn festival, is a holiday that originated from worshipping the moon and celebrating the autumn harvest. Nowadays, it is a chance for families to reunite and celebrate.

When is Moonfest?

This holiday is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, halfway through the month in the middle of autumn. Which is also where it got its namesake.

Where is it Celebrated?

The mid-autumn festival is celebrated throughout many east and southeast asian countries. It is also celebrated by those of east and southeast asian heritage wherever they are on the globe.

How is it Celebrated?

The mid-autumn festival is celebrated in many ways. In Chinese culture, families gather and reunite for a dinner. During this reunion, many families will gift and eat mooncakes as well as admire and worship the moon. They may also make and light lanterns. Communities may come together to organize events that may include traditional performances as well as all of the previously mentioned activities. There is no one way to celebrate the mid-autumn festival.

Why is it Prominent in Chinese Culture?

The mid-autumn moon festival is the second most celebrated holiday after the Lunar New Year.

The full moon symbolizes reunion and it is believed that on the day of the Mid-Autumn festival, the moon is at its fullest and brightest of the year.
